Nature doesn't speckle Ohio's inland waters with rainbow trout, though regular human effort does. The trout, native to chilly Pacific Ocean waters and tributaries, are raised in hatcheries and released each spring by the Ohio Division of Wildlife for catching throughout the Buckeye State. Some 84,000 rainbows, typically 10 to 13 inches long, are scheduled to be let go at 88 locations during the months of March, April and May. The rainbows don't last long, mostly for two reasons: They take bait readily, and they don't survive the warm water temperatures of summer.
